The promotion of well-being and the prevention of suicidal behaviour among young people in Ireland is a major public health concern. Schools play a vital role in the promotion of positive mental health in young people.
The Department of Education and Skills, the Health Service Executive and the Department of Health published ‘Well-Being in Post Primary Schools; Guidelines for Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention’. The guidelines provide practical guidance on how post primary schools can promote mental health and well-being. The Guidelines are based on national and international evidence and best practice and adopt a comprehensive, whole-school approach to mental health and well-being.
